The Origin of the Black Forest Cake Name 

The history of this black forest cake originating from Germany began in the city of Bonn in 1915. It was a cake maker named Bad Godesberg who first made a chocolate sponge cake which was later named Schwarzwälder or Black Forest.

This chocolate sponge cake is characterized by a layer of cream, chocolate shavings and cherries. At first, this cherry topping uses a type of clear cherry that comes from the Schwarzwälder area. These cherries are soaked in Kirschwasser or some kind of Brandy alcoholic drink. In its development, the cherries used vary depending on availability and the area where the cake is made.

There is another theory about the origin of the name Black Forest for this German chocolate sponge cake. There is also an opinion that the name of this black forest comes from the color of the dark brown shavings and the color of the dark brown sponge.

Meanwhile, another opinion says that the name comes from the color combination of traditional women’s clothing from the Black Forest or Schwarzwälder which is black with a white blouse and hat and red balls. This combination is similar to the color of the cake which is white because of the cream coating and the dark color that comes from the chocolate shavings. While the red balls resemble toppings in the form of cherries.

Practical Tips for Making Black Forest Cake

Black Forest cake is actually not too difficult to make because the ingredients are easy to get and the method of making it is not difficult. Even to make it easier to make this cake, there is cake flour which is specially made from a combination of the main ingredients of this cake.

One of these black forest cake flours is the Black Forest Cake mix from Pondan which consists of a blend of wheat flour, skim milk powder, corn flour, powdered sugar, baking powder, cocoa powder and vegetable emulsifiers.

Making a cake using a mixture of cake ingredients can be started by heating the oven to a temperature of 200 degrees Celsius. Then add the black forest flour mixture and beat for 6 minutes on high speed or until the mixture thickens.
